Third trip Back from Tres Unidos: The third visit is
over and the latest state of affairs is best documented by the pictures
we published in the gallery section of our homepage. Nevertheless
here's a brief overview of what's going on there:The abutments on both sides of the river are finished. Unfortunately the anchor rods, which poke out of the concrete, are not coated well enough. Instead of four layers of paint the workers only applied one or two layers. This way, of course, corrosion protection is not given at all and we had to insist on the repainting of every single anchor rod. This means that on the village's side of the river the soil has to be excavated again. New paint has to be bought before the work can continue. Next to this the pylon's foundations have all been excavated and the casting of concrete has started here too. What else? Before our next visit and the final construction of the bridge some steel parts have to be tailormade in Tarapoto, the wood has to be bought and some more materials need to be transported to Tres Unidos. |

New timber Although we decided long ago about the sort of timber we want to use for the bridge, everything has now changed. Eric and Damaso went to the local woodseller who recommended a different sort of wood than the Quinilla we have planned with. The new sort is also very widely-used in the construction business but compared to Quinilla it has longer fibers and therefore is more bending resistant. |

| Steel works Sustainability always stands in the foreground of our desicions concerning the construction and because of this we had our difficulties with steel as part of our plans. On the one hand the climate makes it very vulnerable to corrosion and on the other hand it is not the kind of material which is easy to get and cheap to buy. We had to find a compromise between feasibility and our demands. This resulted in steel parts like "shoe" and "saddle", which now become produced in Tarapoto.
